Men's Soccer Defeated by William Penn 3-2

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa University men’s soccer team fell 3-2 to William Penn University on Saturday night at Peoples Bank Field. This was the first meeting in program history between the two teams. 

The Braves scored first, taking a 1-0 lead at the eight minute mark on a goal by Philip Nguyen. Philip Nelson and Greg Klenyaev combined for the assist. Ottawa continued to attack the Statesmen goal, outshooting WPU 13-6 in the first half. 

Ottawa pushed its lead to 2-0 eight minutes into the second half on a goal by Paul Oswald. The Statesmen came roaring back and scored three unanswered goals. WPU’s Mark Dryden scored at the 74 minute mark, Daniel Beseau tied the game 2-2 at the 79 minute mark off an assist by Dryden and then at the 87th minute mark WPU took the lead off of Dryden’s second goal of the night. The Braves had their chances but could not convert, falling to the Statesmen 3-2. 

OU had a 22-21 edge in shots and both teams had five corner kicks. OU goalkeeper Drinnan Sante had five saves in 90 minutes of work and WPU goalkeeper Sam Gurski had seven saves on the night. 

Up next for the Braves (1-1-0) is a home contest at Peoples Bank Field on Tuesday, Sept. 7th versus Avila University. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
