OTTAWA, Kan. - Ottawa University’s softball program has announced the signing of Taylor Heffern to a letter of intent for the 2010-2011 school year. She is from Yates Center, Kan. and is a transfer from Washburn University. Heffern attended Yates Center High School.

Heffern, a pitcher and first baseman, redshirted her freshman season at Washburn. She will have all four years of eligibility remaining. Heffern was a four year letter winner in softball and basketball and earned three letters in volleyball for Yates Center High School. She earned second team all-state honors and was an all-league performer as a sophomore and junior. She led YCHS with six homeruns, a batting average of .523 and struck out 155 batters her junior season. Heffern played on the Iola Fire summer team and helped lead them to a USSSA 16U State Championship, a second place finish at USSSA State 18U, a second place finish at ASA State 16U and an AFA State 16U third place finish. She is a member of the National Honor Society and a volunteer coach for soccer, basketball and t-ball.

“Taylor is not only a great softball player but she is also a great person. She will add some great depth to our pitching rotation and at first base and will compete for playing time as a red-shirt freshman (had a medical red-shirt at Washburn),” said OU head coach Jay Kahnt. “Taylor knows how to be a true student-athlete and is a great addition to all aspects of Ottawa University. We are very excited about Taylor being a Lady Brave.”

Heffern is the daughter of Mike and Sandra Heffern and plans to major in business administration.
