OTTAWA, Kan. - Ottawa University’s women’s basketball program has announced the signing of Tessa Porter for the 2010-2011 season. She is from Anderson, Mo. and is a transfer from Cottey College. Porter attended McDonald County High School.
“Tess is an outstanding addition to our campus community and basketball program,” said OU head coach Bruce Tate. “She’s a very versatile and long player that will be able to play multiple positions on both ends of the floor in our system."
Porter, a 5’11” guard/forward, lettered one year at Cottey College after transferring from Missouri Southern State University her freshman year. At Cottey College Porter averaged 9.5 points and six rebounds per game. She shot 42 percent from the floor, 24 percent from behind the three point line, averaged 2.1 assists and 1.8 steals per game. At MSSU she averaged 2.3 points and 1.3 rebounds per game.
“Tess is a very unselfish and true team player. She does have the ability to face up and do some nice things from the perimeter and knock down the three,” said Tate. “Her ability to get to the block and play with her back to the basket will also help with points in the paint. I’m very excited to add her ability to rebound to our line-up, which will be a huge asset.”
During her time at McDonald County High School she was a four year letterwinner in both basketball and volleyball. Porter earned first team all-conference, all-district and all-area for the Mustangs on the basketball court. She was a KURM Dream Team selection and was named to the Grove and Neosho Classic All-Tournament Teams. In her career, Porter was a 1,000 point scorer and helped lead her high school basketball and volleyball teams to district championships. On the volleyball court she was a first team all-conference and all-district selection. She also earned first team all-region honors.
“I’m extremely excited Tess has decided to become a Lady Brave,” said Tate. “Her character, personality, experience and leadership will make an immediate impact to our team.”
Porter is the daughter of Chuck and Shelly Porter and plans to major in exercise science.
