OTTAWA, Kan. - The Braves tied the score at 59 with 1:59 on the clock all but could not get over the hump, falling to Bethany College, 62-59 on Saturday night in Wilson Field House.
Bethany opened the game with an early lead and with 9:41 on the clock OU was down by eight, 16-8. During the next two minutes the Braves defense held BC scoreless and tied the game at 16 all on a free throw by Chris Tate. After Bethany retook the lead on a Brandon Miller field goal, OU tied the game again on two free throws by Jake Carter. The Braves took their first lead of the game, 19-18 on a Henry Sloan free throw. The Swedes retook the lead but OU stayed close, tying the game for the fourth time at 29 all with 1:58 on the clock. Ottawa ended the half by outscoring BC, 5-1, taking a four point lead into the half, 34-30.
BC opened the second half by scoring the first nine points and taking a 39-34 lead with 15:06 remaining in regulation. The Braves scored their first points of the half on a field goal by Carter, cutting the deficit to three points, 39-36. After a Brave defensive stop, Isaac Johnston connected on a three point field goal to tie the game for the sixth time at 39-39. The Swedes retook the lead on their next offensive possession and slowly increased it to 10 points, 55-45 on a field goal by Miller at the 5:53 mark. During the final five minutes of the contest OU outscored Bethany, 14-7. Johnston tied the game for the ninth and final time at 59 all with 1:59 on the clock. The Braves were not able to get any closer in the final two minutes, falling 62-59.
Ottawa was 20-57 from the floor for 35.1 percent while Bethany was 22-59 for 37.3 percent. Both teams struggled from behind the three point line with Bethany shooting seven percent (1-13) while OU was 4-18 (22 percent). The Braves had a 26-20 lead in points off of the bench and Bethany lead in second chance points, 12-5.
The Braves had one player in double figures with Corey Smith scoring 11 points. Chris Tate was one rebound and one point way from his second consecutive double-double. He scored nine points and tallied nine rebounds.
Up next for OU (5-19, 3-11) is a road trip to Winfield, Kan. on Thursday, Feb. 11th to play Southwestern College. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in Stewart Field House.
