SALINA, Kan. – The Lady Braves couldn’t make it two in a row as they fell, 72-48 to the Coyotes of Kansas Wesleyan University on Saturday night at Mabee Arena.
Ottawa opened the game by taking a 2-0 lead on the Coyotes on a basket by Kylie Covey. Kansas Wesleyan went on an offensive explosion, connecting on three, three point field goals and taking a 15-4 lead at the 15:21 mark. The Lady Braves picked up the defensive intensity and held KWU scoreless for a three minute stretch. During that time, OU cut the deficit to five points, 15-10. The Coyotes scored the next four points, increasing their lead to seven, 17-10. The Lady Braves continued to hang around the number 21st ranked team in the NAIA and after a three point play by Misty Stone OU was down by four, 21-17. KWU answered by scoring the next four points and increasing it lead to seven, 25-17 with 7:52 left in the half. After free throws from Stone and Taryn Morris OU was down by four, 25-21. KWU received a three point field goal from Shelby Babcock giving the Coyotes a 28-21 lead. The Lady Braves dropped into a zone defense and outscored KWU 7-0, tying the game at 28 all with 3:43 on the clock. Kansas Wesleyan answered by scoring the next seven points and taking the lead once again, 35-28 with 1:55 left in the half. Stacy Post scored on a layup to cut the deficit to five but the Coyotes scored on a free throw with 42 seconds, taking a six point lead at the half, 36-30.
The Lady Braves opened the second half like the first by scoring the first points on a free throw by KiKi Smith, cutting the deficit to five, 36-31. The Coyotes went on a run, outscoring OU 20-11 and taking an 11 point lead, 53-42 with 12:16 remaining in regulation. Ottawa cut into the lead again and after four straight points, two free throws by Post and a put back by Smith, OU was down by seven, 53-46 at the 10:14 mark. The Coyotes went on its second run of the game, outscoring OU in the final 10 minutes 20-2 and taking the game 72-48.
Ottawa shot 37 percent from the floor, 16-43 and was 1-11 from behind the three point line. Kansas Wesleyan shot 43 percent for the game, 25-57 and was 10-23 from behind the arc.
OU was led in scoring by Myah Sprew with 10 points and six rebounds.
Up next for the Lady Braves (4-18, 3-9) is a road trip to Hillsboro, Kan. to play Tabor College. Tipoff in Tabor Gymnasium is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
