Women's Hoops Upends Bulldogs, 86-76

OTTAWA, Kan. – The Lady Braves defeated McPherson College, 86-76 behind the hot three point shooting of Maggie Hasenkamp and Paige Gibson on Thursday night in Wilson Field House. Ottawa scored 30 points off of three point field goals and shot 30 percent from behind the arc. 

In the first seven minutes of the contest there were four ties and two lead changes with McPherson taking a 12-9 lead with 13:27 to go in the half. The Bulldogs continued to hold their lead and with 6:34 on the clock were up by eight points, 26-18. The Lady Braves continued to hang around and took its first lead since the 18:34 mark, 36-35 on a field goal by Hasenkamp with 1:23 on the clock. McPherson was able to get a three point field goal from Brooke Weisenburger with five seconds to, giving MC a two point lead at the half, 38-36. 

Ottawa opened the second half by tying the game at 38 all on a field goal by Misty Stone. McPherson retook the lead and increased it to six points, 53-47 with 14:42 left in regulation. Ottawa hung around and kept fighting; taking the lead for the first time in the second half at the 10 minute mark on a three point field goal by Hasenkamp. The Lady Braves then increased their lead to seven points on field goals by Hasenkamp and Stone. MC went on a mini run and cut the OU lead to two points, 68-66. Gibson hit a three giving the Lady Braves a five point lead, 71-66 with 6:17 on the clock. McPherson again was able to get close, this time within one point, 73-72 . OU received a basket by Myah Sprew and with 3:21 left in regulation OU was up by three, 75-72. That would be the last time McPherson would make a run at the Lady Braves. OU pushed the lead to double digits and took the victory, 86-76. 

OU had five players in double figures, a first this season. The Lady Braves were led in scoring by Misty Stone with 21 points on 8-12 shooting from the floor. Hasenkamp had 17 points, Gibson tallied 12 and both KiKi Smith and Kylie Covey had 10. Smith led OU with seven assists. Hasenkamp was 5-11 from behind the three point line andGibson was 4-12. 

Ottawa led in bench points, 35-26, had a 20-12 lead in points off of turnovers and a 34-26 edge in points in the paint.

Up next for the Lady Braves (4-17, 3-8) is a road trip to Salina, Kan. on Saturday, Jan. 30th to play no. 21 ranked Kansas Wesleyan University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
