Lady Braves Fall in Season Opener

OTTAWA, Kan. - The Lady Braves fell 91-61 to William Jewell College on Tuesday night in the season opener to the 2009-2010 season in Wilson Field House. The Lady Braves are now 24-19 all-time in season openers.

OU, playing without two of its top 10 players stayed close to WJC until the final seven minutes of the first half when WJC took a 19 point lead. The Cardinals continued to hold the lead and were up by 26 points, 39-13 with 4:29 left in the half. OU cut the lead to 21, 39-18 on a three point field goal by Maggie Hasenkamp. In the final 40 seconds the Lady Braves had the lead down to 17 points 45-28 but WJC's Erica Ferguson was fouled with eight seconds left on the clock. She hit both free throws and WJC had a 19 point lead at the half, 47-28.

To begin the second half OU went on a 6-2 run and cut the Cardinal lead to 15 points, 49-34. William Jewell though pushed the lead back to over 20 points, 63-40 with 14:20 left in the game. Ottawa again cut the deficit to 15 points, 71-54  with 7:07 left. But that would be all the closer OU would get as the Cardinals built their lead to the largest of the game, 31 points with 2:17 left and the Lady Braves fell to WJC, 91-61. 

Ottawa had three players in double figures, led by Emma Hartzler's 12 points on 4-11 shooting. KiKi Smith and Maggie Hasenkamp both came off of the bench to score 11 points for the Lady Braves. For the game OU shot 36.2 percent from the floor (21-58). William Jewell was 37-67 for 55.2 percent and had a 56-28 lead in points in the paint.

Up next for the Lady Braves (0-1) is the Friends Classic in Wichita, Kan. on Friday, Nov. 6th and Saturday, Nov. 7th. OU will play Hillsdale Freewill Baptist on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and then take on Central Methodist on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
