OTTAWA, Kan. - The Braves fell to William Jewell College, 74-49 on Tuesday night in the season opener in Wilson Field House. The Braves are now 52-54 all-time in season openers and 17-38 all-time versus the Cardinals.
Neither team started off the game blistering hot and the Braves were within six points, 17-11 with 9:51 left in the half. The Cardinals picked up the scoring and pushed its lead to double digits, 13 points, 28-15 with a little more than three minutes remaining in the first half. OU cut the deficit to 11 and went into the half down 30-19.
The Cardinals started the second half on a 10-0 run and were up 40-19 with 16:44 left in the game. William Jewell continued to hold the lead on the Braves and increased it to as much as 35 points, 66-31 with 6:48 left in the game. The Braves cut the deficit to 26 points, 71-45 on a field goal by Corey Smith but that would be all the closer OU would get as the Braves fall in the season opener, 74-49.
Ottawa was led in scoring by Chase Dippel with 11 points on 4-9 shooting. Both Chris Tate and Jake Carter had 10 points for the Braves. Ottawa shot 40.9 percent from the floor for the game (18-44) and had a 33-17 edge in bench points over WJC.
Up next for the Braves (0-1) is a road trip to Fayette, Mo. on Friday, Nov. 6th and Saturday, Nov. 7th to play in the KCAC/HAAC Classic hosted by Central Methodist University. OU will play Central Methodist University on Friday, Nov. 6th at 7:30 p.m. and then on Saturday play Baker University at 1:00 p.m.
