Women's Hoops Rally Falls Short

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Ottawa made a valiant effort to come back in the second half but could not overcome a 27 point deficit , falling to Haskell Indian Nations University, 73-65 on Thursday night at the Coffin Complex. 

Paige Gibson opened the game up with a basket to give OU an early 2-0 lead in the first half. The Indians then went on a 16-6 run and had a 16-8 lead with 10:34 left in the half. Haskell continued to hold the lead on the cold shooting Lady Braves and were up 23-10 at the 7:47 mark. Ottawa cut the deficit to single digits, nine points, 30-21 with a little more than three minutes left in the half. In the final 3:15 of the first half Haskell scored the only bucket and took an 11 point lead, 32-21 into the half. 

Haskell opened the second half on a 16-3 run and had a 48-24 lead on the Lady Braves at the 15:14 mark. The Indians continued to hold their double digit lead and were up by 27 points, 62-35 with 8:50 left in the second half. Ottawa kept clawing its way back and behind the three point shooting of Jamee Liechtle and Paige Gibson, OU had cut the deficit to eight points, 71-63 with 38 seconds left in the contest. Haskell’s Justina George was fouled and connected on both free thows to push the lead back to double digits. Leichtle hit a basket with 10 seconds left to cut the lead back to eight, 73-65. Haskell ran out the clock and took home the victory. 

OU had two players in double figures led by Gibson’s 15 points. Leichtle scored 11 points on 4-6 shooting in just 10 minutes of play. She also dished out a team high three assists and had zero turnovers. Myah Sprew led OU in rebounding with six and Misty Stone had a team high four steals. The Lady Braves shot 40.7 percent from the floor (24-59) and was a blazing 53.3 percent in the second half. 

Up next for the Lady Braves (1-7) is a road trip on Saturday, Nov. 21st to play William Woods University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
