#5 Braves Host #13 Hastings on Saturday

Scouting #5 Ottawa (10-0): The Braves won their 10th game in a row with a 49-42 victory over then no. 13 Friends University last Saturday afternoon at Adair Austin Stadium. With the victory OU clinches the outright KCAC Championship, its first since 2003. OU now has a total of five undefeated regular seasons. 1938, 1960, 1961, 1965 and 2009. The Braves are led in rushing by Andy Otto (66.6), Ethan Haller is the team leader in passing yards per game (408.7), Corey Schultz leads OU in receptions (7.6), Fielding Brenner is the team leader in tackles (7.7) and Seth Homolka leads OU in sacks (0.8). As a team the Braves offense is first in passing yards per game (417), first in total offense (4170), second in total offensive yards per game (519.5), third in first downs per game (24.5), third in third down conversion (51.9), fourth in pass efficiency (171.6), fifth in scoring offense (46.2) and 23rd in fourth down conversion (52.6). On defense the Braves are first in sacks per game (4.1), first in total sacks (40.5), 12th in rush defense (84.4), 29th in scoring defense (20.4), 39th in opponent third down conversion (35.2), 40th in defensive passing efficiency (115.8), 42nd in total defense (345.8) and 46th in opponent first downs (192). The OU special teams are ninth in kickoff return yards per attempt (22.8), 28th in punt return yards per attempt (10.7), 38th in field goal percentage (0.571) and 42nd in PAT kicking (0.903). Individually, Haller is first in the NAIA in passing yards per game (408.7), second in total passing yards (4,087), second in total offense (3968) and second in total offensive yards per game (396.8). Corey Schultz is first in receiving yards per game (146), first in total receiving yards (1,314) and fifth in receptions per game (7.6). Clarence Anderson is first in total receiving yards (1,314), second in receiving yards per game (131.4) and fourth in total scoring (108). Josh Hojje and Ross Diehl are tied for 13th in forced fumbles per game (0.3) and Seth Homolka is 13th in sacks per game (0.8).

Scouting #13 Hastings College (9-2): The Broncos are 9-2 overall and are on a four game winning steak with their 27-14 victory over Midland Lutheran College last Saturday. Hastings’ two losses are the University of Sioux Falls (42-19) and Morningside College (46-0). The Broncos are led in rushing (72.9) and receptions (2.5) by Maurice Mansfield. Troy Huebert is the team leader in passing yards (133.2), Mackenzie Hemje is the team leader in tackles (8.3) and Pete Botkin leads HC in sacks per game (0.4). On offense the Broncos are 23rd in total rushing yards (1,764), 25th in passing efficiency (132.9), 30th in rushing yards per game (160.4), 34th in total scoring offense (285), 35th in scoring offense per game (25.9) and 40th in fourth down conversion (47.1). On defense, Hastings is 20th in defense per game (292.8), 20th in rush defense (101.5), 26th in defensive passing efficiencey (109.1), 29th in opponent third down conversion (33.3), 43rd in pass defense (191.4) and 48th in opponent fourth down conversion (47.4). The HC special teams are first in PAT kicking (1.000), fourth in field goal percentage (0.800), 15th in punt yards per attempt (39.4) and 35th in kickoff return yards per attempt (19.8). Ernesto Lacayo is first in PAT kicking (1.000), seventh in field goal percentage (0.800) and eighth in total field goals (12). Maurice Mansfield is fifth in all-purpose yards per game (168.3), 15th in total scoring (78) and 21st in scoring touchdowns per game (7.1). Jeff Klug is eightin in interceptions per game (0.5) and 11th in total interceptions (5).

You can listen to the game through Ottawa University’s athletic website, www.ottawabraves.com. Click on the “Live Broadcasts” link on the right side of the athletic website. You will be able to hear the games on the radio or you can go to www.kofo.com to listen through the internet. This year there will be Live Stats. Each home game will have live stats. Go www.ottawabraves.com and select football. Next click on the schedule link on the right hand side of the page. Then click on the details link for that game date and the live stats link will appear. Hastings College Head Coach Paul Mierkiewicz: Coach Mierkiewicz is entering his ninth season as the head football coach at Hastings College with a 51-33 record. Previously, Mierkiewicz served as offensive coordinator and assistant to the athletic director at Hastings College. A Morton Grove, Ill., native, Mierkiewicz played football at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. After coaching stints at Moorhead (Minn.) State and Loras College, Mierkiewicz began his tenure at Hastings College as the offensive coordinator in 1998. In 1999 the Bronco offense broke 12 school records while earning its second consecutive undefeated regular season. The 2008 football team finished the season with an overall record of 7-4, for a sixth place finish in the GPAC.

Rankings in the Poll: The final regular season football poll came out on Sunday afternoon and the Braves moved to no. 5 in the rankings. McPherson moved to no. 12 and with Friends’ loss to Ottawa the Falcons dropped to no. 15. McPherson was the other team in the KCAC that was able to move on to the post season. The Bulldogs will play Mid America Nazarene University at 1:00 p.m. central time at Pioneer Stadium in Olathe, Kan.

All KCAC Team: Ottawa University had 19 football student athletes earn All-KCAC honors the conference office announced on Monday afternoon. OU head coach Kent Kessinger earned KCAC Coach of the Year honors and Ethan Haller was named KCAC Offensive and Player of the Year. Andy Otto earned the “Dr. Ted Kessinger Champions of Character Award.” Haller was a first team selection at quarterback, Clarence Anderson was a first team selection at receiver, Corey Schultz earned first team at receiver, Julian Mendez and Matt Pennington were first team offensive linemen, Ross Diehl and Josh Hojje were first team linebackers, Jamison Shaw was a first team selection on defensive lineman, Casey Wieder was a first team selection at kicker, Anderson earned second team utility player and kick returner, Otto was a second team selection at running back and Zach Schultz, Daniel Caldera, Jay Smith, Earl Moorning, Fielding Brenner, Art Rubio, Seth Homolka and Jarvis Morehead-Reed all earned honorable mention selections.

Undefeated Seasons: With the victory over Friend University last Saturday, the Braves finished their fifth undefeated regular season. OU was undefeated in 1938, 1960, 1961, 1965 and 2009. The 10 wins are the most in program history.

Playing the Broncos: This is the third meeting all-time between the two schools and the second meeting in Ottawa, Kan. Hastings leads the series 2-0. The Braves played the Broncos in 1982 losing 36-33 at Hastings and again in 1983 falling 33-3 to the Broncos in Ottawa. It was during the 1982 game that the longest pass play and touchdown pass from scrimmage in OU history occured. OU quarterback Ignacio Bueno threw a 99 yard touchdown pass to Hercules Stancil on Oct. 23, 1982.

Oh How the Records Have Fallen: This season the Braves have broken 22 individual and or team records. Ethan Haller now owns the single season passing mark (4,087) and the career passing mark (6,973). The defense set the single season sack record (40.5) and tied the single game sack record (11). A complete list is on page seven of the game notes.
