SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The OU softball team used timely hitting to propel itself to the NAIA Opening Round – Sioux City Bracket Championship Game. OU defeated no. 13 Reinhardt University 8-2, holding a team that is ranked 13th in the NAIA in total runs scored (330) to just two runs.
The Braves jumped out on top in the first inning. Jenna Stigge started the game off with a single to center. Kori Lacey reached first on a RU miscue. Elisa Valenzuela would then load the bases with a walk, bringing Ellena Cott-Laurie to the plate. Cott-Laurie put the ball in play, scoring Stigge and OU led 1-0. The Braves would take a 2-0 lead on a RBI single by Aryn Smith.
The Eagles cut into OU's lead with a run in the bottom of the second, 2-1. In the top of the third however, OU would push across four runs. Lacey led the Braves off with a triple to right. Back-to-back walks by Valenzuela and Cott-Laurie loaded the bases. OU would take advantage with runners in scoring position with an Alexa Romero double to left. Lacey and Valenzuela scored to give OU a 4-1 lead. After a strikeout by Smith and a ground out to third by Amber Harris, Savannah Holland would come through. Holland connected on a double to right, scoring by Cott-Laurie and Romero to give the Braves a 6-1 lead.
OU would get another run in the top of the sixth. Holland connected on another double. A sacrifice bunt by Kenzie Stevens moved Holland to third. She was then able to score on a balk by Madison Luck and the Braves had a 7-1 lead. The Eagles would answer in the bottom half of the sixth with a run of their own to cut OU's lead to 7-2.
The Braves responded in the top of the seventh. Cott-Laurie connected on season home run no. 5 to center on a 2-1 count to give OU an 8-2 lead. In the bottom of the seventh it was three up and three down for the Braves as OU took the 8-2 victory.
Holland and Lacey led the Braves with two hits apiece. OU finished with eight hits on the day. Molli Morgan earned her 32nd victory of the season, pitching a complete game. She struck out three and only allowed one earned run.
The Braves (39-17) will now play in the NAIA Opening Round Sioux City Bracket Championship Game on Wednesday, May 17 against Reinhardt University. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
