SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The 2017 OU softball team accomplished something that previous teams were not able to do. They won their first game of the NAIA National Tournament with a 1-0 victory over no. 10 Morningside College at the Jensen Softball Complex. The victory is OU's seventh victory in 15 games against NAIA ranked opponents. The Braves avenged a March 18 double-header loss to Morningside.
Monday's game was a pitching duel between two 30 game winners, Molli Morgan and Rachel Henks. A total of eight hits were recorded in the contest. The Braves only had two hits in the game but it was the first one that was the most important. On a 1-2 count, Elisa Valenzuela took Henks pitch over the right field fence to give OU a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The homerun was her sixth of the season.
The OU defense, behind the pitching of Morgan, only allowed one Mustang to reach third base and that was in the bottom of the third inning. In the bottom of the seventh, after the first batter reached base on an OU miscue, it was a 1-2-3 inning as the Braves took the 1-0 victory.
Valenzuela and Smith had one hit apiece for OU. Morgan earned victory no. 31, pitching in all seven innings in the victory.
The Braves (38-17) will now play Reinhardt University on Tuesday, May 16 in Sioux City, Iowa. Game time is set for 11:00 a.m.
