YORK, Neb. – The OU baseball team fell 12-9 to nationally ranked York College on Sunday afternoon.
York though answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the second the Panthers were able to take their first lead of the game with homerun by Isaiah Bond, giving York a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, OU would retake the lead. Hecmart Nieves led things off with a single to right. Perez then walked and OU had runners at first and second. A single by Alexis Cruz loaded the bases for the Braves and brought Michael Steinbacher to the plate. Steinbacher hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Nieves to tie the game a 2-2.
Cole Boardman then singled to right to load the bases once more. On a passed ball by YC catcher Billy Damon, Perez scored and OU had a 3-2 lead. Rhett Taylor then connected on a sacrifice fly, scoring Cruz and OU led 4-2.
It was in the bottom of the fifth though that York would score six runs to retake the lead 8-4. In the top of the sixth the Braves would score two runs to into the deficit. Alexis Cruz scored on a single by Cole Boardman and the Braves trailed 8-5. Michael Hayworth's single up the middle scored Steinbacher to put OU within 8-6.
In the bottom of the sixth the Panthers answered with three runs to increase its lead to 11-6. After a scoreless seventh by both teams, OU was able to score two more runs in the top of the eighth. Boardman led off with a single down the left field line. Taylor then connected on his first homerun of the season and OU was down 11-8.
In the bottom half of the inning, York scored one more run to take a 12-8 lead. The Braves tried to rally in the top of the ninth. Cruz singled to left, scoring Nieves to cut into the Panther lead. The Braves though were not able to complete the comeback, falling to the Panthers, 12-9.
Boardman, Cruz, and Nieves all had three hits apiece. Taylor led the Braves with three RBI. Boardman pitched in six innings, striking out six. Tanner Stone appeared in two innings, striking out one.
The Braves (18-14, 2-7) are back at home on Saturday, March 25 against the University of Saint Mary. Game one of the double header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
